Telecommuting 1.0 - The Home Office as Seen by Management
  • Roll out of bed.
  • Turn on laptop.
  • Turn on TV.
  • 45 minutes of work.
  • Beat high score on X-Box.
  • Run an errand since the internet is down anyway.
  • Missed a few phone calls because the answering machine ate the tape.
(This may not be the reality, but it is what many managers fear would happen if all their staff were working from home.)
For those who have the proper working facilities, discipline and support of management, there is no more efficient working environment than the home office. The reality is that not every home has adequate facilities in their home or an environment that is conducive to working in the home. For these people, the best solution is a Remote Office Center.

  • Take a few breaks during the day and chat with other workers in the center so you don't go crazy.
  • Attend 3 conference calls.
  • Go home at the end of the day and forget about work until the next day.
The difference between Remote Office Centers and traditional telecommuting is the office. The Remote Office Center model recognizes that many workers require the structure and infrastructure of a professional office environment in order to be productive. Remote Office Center workers telecommute from an office that is convenient to them rather than commute long distances every day.

Remote Office Centers are often referred to as Telecommuting Centers or Telework Centers. All three terms denote the same basic operational mode. The difference between an Remote Office Center and a Telecommuting Center is that the focus is on the office/work environment. Telecommuting Centers promote network access. Remote Office Centers utilize the network, but they offer the promise of a professional office work area, so that workers can be as productive as they are in a traditional office.
